Operation Lifesaver Partners with Halton Learning Foundation to Promote Rail Safety to Students

BURLINGTON, April 28, 2015 ‐‐ In conjunction with National Rail Safety Week, April 27‐May 3, Operation Lifesaver has announced a partnership with the Halton Learning Foundation to deliver rail safety programs to students across the Halton District School Board. The initiative will begin with students who attend Halton public schools located close to railway lines. Eventually, students across Halton will learn about rail safety through Operation Lifesaver.

“Students don’t always realize that crossing or walking on railway tracks can be dangerous,” said Kelly Amos, Chair of the Halton District School Board. “It’s critical for our students to understand the risks and learn how to prevent accidents from happening to either themselves or their friends, and this program will be a key element.”

“Safety is very much a shared responsibility with our students and education plays a big part,” said Stephen Covey, Operation Lifesaver President. “Children and teenagers play a great role as ambassadors in our community, spreading the word on safety to their friends, their playmates, their family and their neighbours. Together, we can raise public awareness about rail safety and save lives.”

At a media conference April 28 to announce the Operation Lifesaver initiative, one of Operation Lifesaver’s partners, CN, pledged its support for the Halton Learning Foundation. It is the largest partnership in the 12‐year history of the foundation and will ensure more schools and students in need across Halton receive financial assistance.

Carol D’Amelio, Chair of the Board of the Halton Learning Foundation, said the partnership with CN is instrumental. “Their contribution means that more Halton District School Board students will receive the support they need in order to remain in school and stay engaged in learning.”

“Ensuring students have the resources and tools they need to learn is key to their success,” said Paul Deegan, CN Vice‐President of Public and Government Affairs. “CN is proud to support the Halton Learning Foundation to help students reach their full potential.”
