Help Students with Financial Barriers to Learning

Every student deserves a chance, and poverty remains a powerful factor in whether a student succeeds in school. Education is the great equalizer for success in life.

The Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) provides emergency financial support to students, assistance for schools, and scholarships through donor-directed funding. We are looking for community members to join our volunteer Board of Directors and two Committees.

Strategic Direction – 2024–2027

Aligned with the priorities of HDSB, HLF will increase engagement with schools, families, and members of the Halton community, reaching a higher number of students in need. We aim to increase awareness of HLF and revenue while being fiscally responsible.

Our Mission:

To provide HDSB students with opportunities to reach their potential through financial support that removes educational barriers and increases equity.

Our Vision:

All HDSB students have financial support to realize their potential.

HLF supports one in ten HDSB students who live at or below the poverty line, an estimated 6,600 young people. We are currently seeking the following volunteers:

  1. Board of Directors – up to 3 new members
  2. Finance and Audit Committee – up to 2 new members
  3. Governance and Nominations Committee – up to 2 new members

We welcome applications from influencers, connectors, business, and community leaders who can use their influence to open doors to new partners and decision-makers. We believe that all children deserve to fully participate in their education, regardless of financial means.

Candidates should ideally represent a community within Halton Region and offer HLF their skills and expertise in strategic development, board governance, financial oversight, partnership development, and philanthropy, combined with the courage to commit to a new, ambitious three-year strategic plan.

If you have a history of community involvement and are ready to make a difference in the life of a child in your neighborhood, please provide your cover letter, CV and which of the volunteer opportunities you are interested in applying for, addressed to Bob Elliot (Board Chair) and Marc Clare (CEO) by December 20, 2024, at clarem@haltonlearningfoundation.ca.

HLF is committed to diversity, trust, and teamwork, fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment through our values of compassion, respect, integrity, and adaptability. Additional information about HLF can be found on our website: www.haltonlearningfoundation.ca.
