Halton Learning Foundation Seeks Help to Send Kids Back to School

Basic necessities help set students up for success

With classes resuming in a few short weeks, the Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) is preparing to be inundated with requests to help students within the Halton District School Board (HDSB) go back to school with the necessary supplies and clothing for a successful academic year.

“Every parent wants to send their kids back to school with the right classroom supplies and new clothes and shoes, but that is simply out of reach for many Halton families,” said Marc Clare, HLF’s CEO. “We know of kids who come to class without breakfast or lunch, are wearing their parents’ clothing, or who have broken prescription glasses. We would like every child to start the school year with the resources they need to focus on learning and to be included with their peers.”

A school secretary has shared her feedback on HLF’s impact: “This single dad had requested help to purchase groceries for his four girls. Two hours after receiving the gift cards, he sent the school a photo of a grocery cart filled with food. HLF makes a difference!”

HLF is launching its annual 2024 Back to School fundraising campaign, with a goal of providing school necessities for at least 300 students of the HDSB by September 30. Throughout the school year, HLF helps eliminate financial barriers to learning for HDSB students by providing grocery cards for basic necessities, which provide families with the ability to choose items that best meet their children’s needs.

Referrals for assistance are provided by school staff who identify students in need.

In 2023-2024, HLF responded to almost 2,900 requests from school staff to support students in need – a 45% increase over the previous year.

HLF is thrilled to be partnering with belairdirect for the second year to match monthly donations for the first year up to a total of $15,000.

HLF is inviting Halton business community members to join us in making a lasting impact and becoming Back to School Champions. To become a Back to School Champion, you can support the campaign by making a donation, organizing a company-wide fundraiser to engage your staff/ customers, or sharing the campaign across your platforms—website, social media, or newsletters. Email info@haltonlearningfoundation.ca for more information on becoming a Back to School Champion or to receive the Back to School Champion Resource Toolkit.

By partnering with HLF, your company can help provide essential supplies and resources to students across Halton, reducing barriers to education and fostering an inclusive learning environment.
